DOUGLAS WATT is a historian, poet and novelist. He is the author of The Price of Scotland: Darien, Union and the Wealth of Nations (2007), a history of the Darien Disaster and its effect on the Union of the Parliaments, which won the Hume Brown Senior Prize in Scottish History in 2008.. He was inspired by his extensive investigations into seventeenth century Scotland to create the character of John MacKenzie, loosely based on a real historical figure, and to bring the history of the period to life.
