Fàilte – Welcome!
And what a warm welcome by Graeme Mackenzie it was on Monday 3rd August at the Ben Wyvis Hotel Strathpeffer. As it was our first time we did not really know what to expect, but what we noticed instantly was the warm, relaxed and very friendly atmosphere. Graeme Mackenzie was easily approachable, and everyone was keen to put all the clan members at ease, and to help everyone get to know each other.
My wife and I were both pleasantly surprised at the number of individual events on offer and we attended most of them.
On Tuesday David Broadfoot did an excellent job with great enthusiasm teaching Ceilidh for beginners which really helped our confidence on the actual Ceilidh night. The tour of Highland Archive Centre and Town house was just amazing: very well organised; the detail about the Archives was fascinating and we really enjoyed it.
Wednesday off to Culloden and thanks to Andrew Mackenzie although we have been to Culloden before Andrew explained it in a refreshing new way. Fort George was incredible; I could have spent a futher full day there; far too much to take in on one day.
Thursday was the Siobhan Mackenzie fashion show and, to tell the truth, as a man I was not terribly interested in it but I booked it for my wife. However, on the night I found to my surprise that I really loved it!
Friday: The MacDonald encounter was great fun. We were very impressed with Scotty Morgan playing the bagpipes – first class. We noticed particularly the family atmosphere of the event it was very friendly and informal. I did have a chat with Caberfeidh about this: how relaxed the Gathering was and how well people got along with each other.
Nevertheless, it took a lot of work to organise and it takes a lot of work to run the Clan Mackenzie Society of Scotland and UK so can I encourage UK members to get involved. In a nutshell: with all the events there was something for everyone to enjoy – what a great Clan Mackenzie gathering Cuidich N Righ
